Summary of this week's theme
Trinity Sunday invites us to reflect on the evolving nature of faith, using the Nicene Creed, not as a rigid checklist, but as a milestone on the lifelong journey of Christian understanding. Our recent Lenten study on the Creed affirmed that while the Creed defines essential beliefs about the Trinity, it also raises questions many believers continue to wrestle with. Faith is not about complete certainty, but about ongoing openness to growth, learning, and transformation.
Jesus’ divinity affirms the sacredness of humanity; his humanity offers a model for living. Creation itself is sacred, inviting not only reverence but also joy, exploration, and even play. The Spirit of Truth continues to speak across generations, and the process of metanoia - ongoing repentance and conversion - is lifelong. We need a healthy dose of humility, which reminds us that communities, like individuals, risk spiritual stagnation when they stop learning.
The theologian Walter Brueggemann invites us to celebrate the prophetic power of imagination to envision a more just and hopeful world. The church is called to be countercultural: to challenge injustice, to care for one another, and to live out faith in tangible ways. Trinity Sunday becomes not just a doctrinal moment but a celebration of divine relationship, creative potential, and Spirit-empowered action.
Ultimately, we have to ask ourselves how we are using God-given gifts and whether we might imagine new, life-giving ways to serve. Faith is not only what we believe, but how we live, love, and grow in God’s world.
