NEWS FROM JANUARY 2026
Christmas ! It was good to have some news of festivities of friends in the UK over the Christmas period.
Many thanks to Audrey Perrin who sent a Christmas Eve photo of their two new great grandsons arriving in time to celebrate the birth of Jesus – Jackson (8lbs 7oz) with Audrey and Teodoro (6lb 5oz at one week old) with Lawrence. We send congratulations to all the family.

Tuesday 6 January – Epiphany and a national holiday. Los Reyes (the Kings) did not disappoint when they arrived on the evening of 5 January bringing presents for all the children throughout the island to be distributed on the morning of the 6th!
Saturday 17 – Sant Antoni (the patron saint of the Balearics, as well as one of the patron saints of animals) was celebrated in most of the towns with the usual variety of animals coming for their annual blessing! In Es Mercadal and other towns there were fun times with food and the traditional braziers and sausage roasting as well as bands and music, and of course a pomada or two !

An excellent January Chaplaincy lunch was held on the 22nd at a new venue – Asiatico on the port of Mahon – with 2 tables and almost record numbers including many visitors attending. A first class start to 2026.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. An Ecumenical prayer service to mark the start of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was held at Santa Margarita on Saturday 24 January at 17.00 with the Bishop of Menorca, Bishop Gerard, and our Roman Catholic friends. A very enjoyable occasion with a good service and followed by wine and some excellent nibbles! We missed Father Alberto who retired at the end of last year. Father Miquel Angel has now joined the church of El Roser in Es Castell from his Seminary to replace Father Alberto. Paul has met him but we are looking forward to getting to know him too.

Chaplaincy Council. Thanks to all those who remembered and prayed for the deliberations of the January council meeting.

Archdeaconry Synod. This took place at La Zenia, south of Alicante, in the last week of January attended by Paul and our two Synod representatives. Bishop Andrew and our Archdeacon, David Waller, were preaching. There were also small group discussions. Trevor and Margaret, our Synod representatives, will be providing a full report of all that happened in Synod, including Bible study, presentations by Bishop Andrew and (from Peru) Bishop Victor, as well as Diocesan staff.
FEBRUARY AND FUTURE EVENTS 2026
Shrove Tuesday. This falls on Tuesday 17 February and there will be our usual Pancake lunch celebration at the church with the Rev. Paul showing off his excellent pancake tossing skills ! More details soon.
Lent 2026. Starts with Ash Wednesday on 18 February when there will be an Imposition of Ashes service. Lenten studies which are usually followed by a simple soup and cheese lunch have not yet been finalised. More details in due course.
The Annual Church Meetings have been arranged for Sunday 22 March 2026 at 12.30pm after the service. Please make a note of the date. It will be possible to attend on Zoom.
Electoral Roll. Are you on the Electoral Roll which means you can vote and participate in the Annual Meetings? Being on the Roll enables you to contribute to the development and way forward for our Chaplaincy through participation in the Annual Meetings and perhaps becoming a member of the Chaplaincy Council. You can apply to join the Electoral Roll at any time. Application forms will be available at the back of the church and should be completed and returned (following the instructions on the reverse of the form). If you are not on island or cannot attend church then request a form from info@anglicanchurchmenorca.com.
Chaplaincy Council (formerly the PCC) – join the team ! Have you considered joining the Council? If you are regular member at Santa Margarita, even if you are not resident, then do prayerfully consider seeking nomination. Meetings can be attended on Zoom. Your contribution will be very much valued. Discuss with Paul if you would like further details of how you can contribute. Nomination forms from info@anglicanchurchmenorca.com
Current Members of the Chaplaincy Council are David Green and Kathy Rossetti (Church Wardens) and Liz Astley, Carole Brayford, Colin Guanaria, Suzanne Hodges (treasurer), Heike Pieper, and Margaret and Trevor (the two Archdeaconry Synod representatives).
Roqueta. The Rev. Paul’s articles from Roqueta, Menorca’s English language magazine, are posted on the church web site. Good reading !
Mission Giving for 2026. The Church Council has yet to agree the main beneficiaries of our giving for this current year. More details will be available in due course.
Coffee after Sunday services. Thank you to the volunteers who have joined the group serving refreshments after the service. Further volunteers are welcome. The small donations of 1.50€ per cup of coffee each week are used to support a number of different aspects of chaplaincy life from aiding the needy with food, to the floral decorations in the church.
