NEWS FROM APRIL 2025

The Wedding!  April was a busy time ! First of all the Rev. Paul and Kate were away at the beginning of the month in California for Kate’s daughter’s wedding. Many of us have enjoyed seeing the wonderful photos. Sadly it is only possible to include a very small selection here.

Palm Sunday.  We were grateful to the Rev. Richard Bubbers who led our Palm Sunday service in Paul’s absence. Richard and his wife, Sally, are regular visitors to Santa Margarita.

Holy Week. Paul returned from Nevada and was immediately into Holy Week events. First there was the Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross) procession around Es Castell with Bishop Gerard, Father Alberto and other Catholic clergy.

On Maundy Thursday in the morning there was foot washing and Holy Communion followed by Tenebrae, Holy Communion and stripping of the altar in the evening.

Good Friday - 18 April At 12 noon - the 3 hour vigil based upon the stations of the cross and Saturday 19 April 20:30 in church - the Great Vigil of Easter with a new paschal candle, and Holy Communion.

Sunday 20 AprilEaster Day - A wonderful celebration with the Easter sunrise service of Holy Communion at Punta Prima beach followed later in the morning by Holy Communion in church, with Easter chocolate !

St George’s Day - Wednesday 23 April – A wonderful St. George’s service in the Naval Chapel on the Isla del Rey – well attended and much enjoyed with Paul delivering his sermon in both English and Spanish. General Luis Alejandre and other Spanish residents attended. Being San Jordi and book day and roses, there was a red rose for all the ladies.

To celebrate St. George’s day a Chaplaincy Lunch was held at Can Avellino in Mahon.

Gwent Touring Band – and finally to round off April we enjoyed an excellent concert in church with the band and Lana entertaining us in the usual way !  Much appreciated.

MAY AND FUTURE EVENTS 2025

Chaplaincy Lunch for May will be a Tapas lunch at 2pm on Wednesday 21 May at the home of Carole & Tony Brayford in Son Parc. This will be fund raiser for the Chaplaincy so in the hope you enjoy the wine and food, do bring some cash !! A sign up sheet will be available in church, or let Carole or Paul know by Sunday 18 May.

Chaplaincy Council (“CC”) meeting – Tuesday 20 May at 12 noon. Please pray for all the discussions as the Council meet for the first time since the Annual meeting.

Paul Annual Leave. Paul and Kate will be away from 23 May to 3 June. The Rev. David Jacks will be taking care of Santa Margarita in his absence.

Afternoon worship at the outdoor chapel in Cala’n Bosc, normally on the last Sunday of the month. The next service will be on Sunday 8 June at 17.00 as Paul will be away at the end of May.

GENERAL

Mission Giving for 2025. The Council has agreed that the main beneficiaries of our giving this year will be support for Peruvian students (we are actively seeking to identify suitable candidates), and also food vouchers to the needy on the island (via the Red Cross).

Coffee after Sunday services.  We are delighted that Kathy, after her short break, has rejoined Liz in serving our coffee and tea after each of the services.   We do ask for a small donation of 1.50€ per cup of coffee each week – these donations are used to support a number of different aspects of chaplaincy life from aiding the needy with food, to the floral decorations in the church.

If anyone is willing to host a future social event – coffee morning, afternoon tea, or simple tapas that would be much appreciated.  Please let Carole know.
