NEWS FROM MAY 2025
Weddings! After last month’s report of the “Wedding of the Year” (Kate’s daughter!), we continued into May on the wedding theme with two Wedding Blessings conducted by Paul – both lovely occasions.
First Communion. Another happy occasion followed with Calian’s first Communion. You will remember he was baptised in November last year.
Thanksgiving for the birth of a Baby
Natalie, from Belgium, and her husband, Paulo, from Brazil, had their wedding blessed last year at La Mola, and then in July, they came for a blessing of their expected baby. In May a lovely service was held when baby Cecilia returned in person with her parents and grandparents for a service of Thanksgiving.
May Chaplaincy Lunch. The planned tapas lunch at the Brayfords was postponed until June (but now until September). In its place we enjoyed a convivial afternoon at Trattoria Vianello in Mahon with over 20 of us including a number of friends and visitors.
The Chaplain’s Holiday! Paul and Kate are away from 23 May to 4 June (inclusive). During this time Santa Margarita is being very capably served by the Rev. David Jacks, who recently retired as Vicar of Christ Church, Ashton under Lyne, in the Diocese of Manchester (see photo, below left).
For the two Sundays of Paul’s absence there is no 9am service and the Friday service is only available as a recording through the web site. The 11am services are as usual but also graced by the formidable talents of Melanie Plumley on the organ.
JUNE AND FUTURE EVENTS 2025
The Chaplain’s Holiday! Paul (see photo, above right) visiting the beautiful Monastery of St John the Theologian in Patmos, Greece. After visiting the Monastery he and Kate spent some reflective time in the cave where the Book of Revelation was written! The following day they followed in the footsteps of the Apostle Paul and toured Ephesus in Turkey.
Organ Recital – Wednesday 4 June at 20.00. Melanie Plumley is offering an organ recital in the church. The repertoire is described as “An Hour of Music for a Summer Evening”.
Chaplaincy Lunch for June - Regrettably it has been necessary to postpone the tapas lunch at Carole and Tony Brayford's home in Son Parc on 18 June. In its place we will be going to Can Jaume in Es Mercadal at 13:30 on that day.
Afternoon worship at Cala’n Bosc. The next service will be on Sunday 8 June at 17.00 as Paul will be away at the end of May.
Daleen - Ordination to the Priesthood in Brussels Cathedral. Many of you will remember Daleen who visited us several times and was mentored by Paul. She was ordained in Brussels in June last year (see photo below) and in July this year she will be ordained to the priesthood in `Saint George's Church in Lisbon. Paul will be attending the ordination service, and has been asked to preach at her first Eucharist the next day. Please pray for her as she makes this next important step on her journey.
GENERAL
Mission Giving for 2025. The Council has agreed that the main beneficiaries of our giving this year will be support for Peruvian students and also food vouchers to the needy on the island (via the Red Cross).
Coffee after Sunday services. We do ask for a small donation of 1.50€ per cup of coffee each week – these donations are used to support a number of different aspects of chaplaincy life from aiding the needy with food, to the floral decorations in the church.
If anyone is willing to host a future social event – coffee morning, afternoon tea, or simple tapas that would be much appreciated. Please let Carole know.
If you would like to support the ministry of Santa Margarita, the Anglican Church in Menorca, then you can do so by clicking the Donate button below.
