NEWS FROM JUNE 2025

The Chaplain’s Holiday !  During Paul and Kate’s absence on holiday at the end of May/beginning of June, we were glad to welcome  the Rev. David Jacks, (who recently retired as Vicar of Christ Church, Ashton under Lyne, in the Diocese of Manchester) to serve Santa Margarita.

Although there was no 9am service in Paul’s absence, the 11am was enhanced by Melanie Plumley leading our worship on the organ.

Organ Recital - Melanie Plumley also offered an organ recital in the church  “An Hour of Music for a Summer Evening” which proved a very enjoyable evening.

Annual visit to the Anglo-American cemetery in Cala Llonga.  Paul presided over the annual memorial service to honour those interred there, principally in the late 18th century.  It was attended by representatives from the US Navy League, the Consell de Menorca, the Rubio Foundation, and Spanish Navy and Army (the latter has responsibility for looking after the cemetery).

June Chaplaincy Lunch. The planned tapas lunch at the Brayfords had to be postponed yet again(!) but an excellent lunch was enjoyed at Can Jaume in Es Mercadal with a number of visitors and friends joining us.

Others of note graced our lunch venue although regrettably couldn’t make our date !  Intrigued ? See the link for more details

Wedding Blessing.  Another wedding blessing in June at Club Menorca in Cala en Porter – Stacy and David.

Visiting Colleagues

A number of clergy colleagues from our Deanery visited Menorca and Santa Margarita in June.  Paul took the opportunity to show some around the necropolis at Cala Morell.

JULY AND FUTURE EVENTS 2025

Worship at Santa Margarita.  Paul will be away in Lisbon the weekend of 5/6th July (see below).  There will be no service at 9.00am on Sunday 6 July.  A service of Holy Communion at 11am will be led by Rev. Canon Dr Ishanesu Gusha, the priest in charge at Palma, Mallorca (pictured above, centre).

Daleen - Ordination to the Priesthood in Lisbon Cathedral – 5 July.  Many of you will remember Daleen who visited us several times and was mentored by Paul.  She was ordained as a transitional deacon last year (see picture above) and then went to Lisbon where she is serving 3 years as a curate.  She will be ordained as a priest in Lisbon Cathedral on 5 July and Paul will be attending the service.  He has been asked to preach at her first Eucharist on 6 July  Please pray for her as she makes this next important step on her journey

Patronal Festival of Santa Margarita - Sunday 20 July at 18.00.  As in previous years the feast day of Santa Margarita will be celebrated with a procession starting from the Catholic church in Es Castell (El Roser) to Santa Margarita.  A band will lead Santa Margarita on her “chariot” followed by clergy and our congregation including Spanish neighbours.  At Santa Margarita there will be an ecumenical service of prayer and music.  We will follow this with refreshments to share with our visitors.  If you are able to contribute a plate of nibbles do talk with Liz Astley or Kathy Rosseti.   More details nearer the time on the church website.

Es Castell Fiesta This will be on 24 and 25 July !  Enjoy !

Chaplaincy Lunches . As we will be celebrating our Patronal Festival this month the refreshments after the service will stand in place of our usual lunch at a restaurant.  In August when it will be hot, humid and busy, we hope we can offer a tapas lunch.

Afternoon worship at Cala’n Bosc .  The next service will be on Sunday 27 July at 17.00.

GENERAL

Mission Giving for 2025. The Council has agreed that the main beneficiaries of our giving this year will be support for Peruvian students and also food vouchers to the needy on the island (via the Red Cross).

Coffee after Sunday services.  We do ask for a small donation of 1.50€ per cup of coffee each week – these donations are used to support a number of different aspects of chaplaincy life from aiding the needy with food, to the floral decorations in the church.

If anyone is willing to host a future social event – coffee morning, afternoon tea, or simple tapas that would be much appreciated.  Please let Carole know.

If you would like to support the ministry of Santa Margarita, the Anglican Church in Menorca, then you can do so by clicking the Donate button below.

Your donation will be very gratefully received.
