NEWS FROM JULY 2025
Es Castell Fiesta As always a fun filled occasion celebrated by everyone in the town. The photos say it better than words.
And in the crowd were Paul and Father Alberto. The latter will sadly be retiring later this year.
Patronal Festival of Santa Margarita - Sunday 20 July at 18.00
As in previous years the feast day of Santa Margarita was celebrated with a procession starting from the Catholic church in Es Castell (El Roser) to Santa Margarita. The band led Santa Margarita followed by clergy and our congregation including Spanish neighbours.
At Santa Margarita there was an ecumenical service of prayer and music followed by refreshments shared with our visitors.
Ordination of the Rev. Daleen Bakker – 5 July.
Daleen has had an association with Menorca since she was an intern in Barcelona as part of the Ministry Experience Scheme in 2020-2021. She visited us several times and was mentored by Paul. Having been ordained as a transitional deacon last year, on the 5 July she was ordained to the priesthood at Saint George's Anglican Church, Lisbon by Suffragan Bishop the Rt Rev Andrew Norman – see photo. The second photo shows her with Paul and her father. Paul attended the service and was invited to preach at her first Eucharist on Sunday 6 July (see third and fourth photos). Please continue to pray for her.
Worship at Santa Margarita.
Whilst Paul was away in Lisbon the weekend of 5/6th July we were grateful to have the Rev. Canon Dr Ishanesu Gusha, the priest in charge at Palma, Mallorca, leading our service of Holy Communion.
Sad News in July.
Sheena Yallop, a resident on the island for many years, and a very active presence at Santa Margarita, died peacefully in Scotland. Also, Keith Stirling who had been associated with Santa Margarita for many years passed away at the end of June. May they rest in peace.
AUGUST AND FUTURE EVENTS 2025
Tapas Lunch – Wednesday 13 August 2pm.
This will be at Carole and Tony Brayford’s home in Son Parc. A sign up sheet is on the church notice board. If you can join us, let Carole or Paul know by Sunday 10 August to ensure there is sufficient food !! Or use the sign up sheet. There will be an opportunity to meet the two Ordinands – see below.
Ordinands.
During the month of August, Santa Margarita will be graced by the presence of two ordinands from London who have a long association with Menorca. They will be assisting in worship and preaching at a couple of services, so you will see them cropping up in some of the weekly videos. Some more details:
Kath and Jamie have two young children (Amelie, who is five, and Noah, who is three). They live in King's Cross in London, and are based at a large Church of England church there called KXC where among other things they oversee Mission and Evangelism which includes prison ministry, refugee and asylum-seeker ministry and Alpha. They were previously church leaders in another denomination for a number of years, but last September began their training for ordination within the Church of England. As part of that training they are required to complete an 'alternative placement' for a few weeks in a different part of the Anglican Church to KXC. Jamie grew up spending extended time in Menorca since he was a baby and has cumulatively now spent years of his life there. Kath and their two young children have also become adopted Menorca-enthusiasts over the years! Together, they are excited about getting to join in and serving the church out in Menorca this August.
Afternoon worship at Cala’n Bosc . The next service will be on Sunday 24 August at 17.00.
GENERAL
Mission Giving for 2025. The Church Council has agreed that the main beneficiaries of our giving this year will be support for Peruvian students and also food vouchers to the needy on the island (via the Red Cross).
Coffee after Sunday services. We are trying to broaden the group of those who serve refreshments after the service. Volunteers will be welcomed. Talk to Paul. The small donations of 1.50€ per cup of coffee each week are used to support a number of different aspects of chaplaincy life from aiding the needy with food, to the floral decorations in the church.
If anyone is willing to host a future social event – coffee morning, afternoon tea, or simple tapas that would be much appreciated. Please let Carole know.
